If you look at the biggest horror movies of all time, right? Jaws is a horror movie. And I think in the last five years, people have kind of rediscovered how popular the genre is, and how different it is. You know, The Exorcist, The Omen, those are the biggest movies of the time.Īnd then we ran into a little bit of a funk in the 80s, where so many low budget slashers were produced to capitalize on the success of things like Friday the 13th and Halloween, that the genre got into a little bit of a rut. In early Hollywood, in like the 20s and 30s, Dracula, Frankenstein, Wolfman were the biggest movies out there, right? And then in sort of the 70s, you had this like, literary horror. You know, horror has gone through ups and downs over the years. And it does feel like, Craig, that we are in, over the past couple of five years, there's been a new wave and a Renaissance of the horror genre, particularly as social commentary with movies like Get Out, right? So do you think that that has brought renewed interest into the genre, and what are some other themes that you're seeing being explored, that people are interested in, or that you're excited about?ĬRAIG ENGLER: Yeah, that's a great question.

You have to have characters, you have to have set up, you have to have a whole reason for being scared. And what people kind of realized is just jump scares in movie, just like, something popping out at you at an unknown time, isn't really enough anymore. I think people, though, always love a great scary movie. CRAIG ENGLER: You know, horror has a lot of different genres, right? There's scary, there's slow burn, there's like, J-horror, which is Japanese horror.
